Why Buy Local?

Why buy local? It's simple. Local food is fresher, tastier, and supports local farmers, communities and economy.

When you buy local, you are buying a product that was grown in your own state or community. Much of the produce in the grocery store comes from California, Mexico, South America, or even further away! Several studies have shown that the average distance food travels from “farm to plate” is 1,500 miles.

When you buy Michigan food, it doesn't have to travel as far, so it gets to spend longer in the fields, ripening. It arrives to you fresher, crisper and more flavorful.

Buying local food also keeps money circulating close to home. Venues like farmers' markets attract people who then often buy at other local businesses. Local farmers are more likely to spend the money they make locally as well.

And that's not all! There's a wealth of resources out there with information about what local food can do for local health, communities and economies.
