September 15, 2005 Declared “Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Select Michigan Day”.

September 15th has been designated “Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Select Michigan Day”, through a resolution introduced by Representative David Farhat – 91st District. Michigan Food & Farming Systems – MIFFS and the Michigan Department of Agriculture – MDA have been partners for several local, regional and state agricultural initiatives and are sponsors of this state designated day. The resolution was unanimously passed by the Michigan House to encourage citizens to “Buy Fresh and Buy Local” which supports and preserves Michigan’s agricultural heritage and contributes to the growth of the state’s economy.

Agriculture is the second largest economic engine in Michigan, second only to the automotive industry in terms of economic contribution, adding over $37 billion to the state’s economy each year. Michigan has excellent growing conditions for many different types of vegetables, fruits, beans, grains and livestock. It’s fertile soils, moderate climate, abundant water and innovative production strategies enable farmers to grow over 125 different products, making Michigan second only to California in diversity of production.

When asked, Michigan residents prefer to purchase products that are grown here in Michigan, and an increasing number of residents are interested in learning more about where their food comes from. Purchasing and eating locally grown and produced food brings with it a multitude of benefits. Locally grown food is fresher and higher in nutritional content and purchasing locally grown and produced products benefits Michigan’s local communities by improving the economic, environmental and social well being of those communities and the state.

Spending just $10 per week on local food would keep over $37 million circulating in Michigan.
